Built-ins in Aurora

Built-ins are cabinets and shelving fixed to the room, drawn to the walls they sit against and scribed on site. Aurora has century houses with later back additions in the older core and newer subdivision housing with nine foot main floor ceilings east and north of it. Older houses with chimney breasts and alcoves are made for built-ins; newer rooms with flat walls gain a place for them from a run of shelving with a lit centre.

Built-ins · Aurora

Aurora, on the ground.

Driveways are deep and garages attached in the newer areas, while the older core has narrower drives and a step up at the back door. Boxes are built and finished in the shop, delivered and scribed to the alcove over [n] days.

Where a Aurora kitchen sits in a later addition, the addition rarely meets the original house square, so the transition is designed as a panelled return rather than a butt joint.

Site conditionsChimney breasts, sloped ceilings and out-of-square alcoves add scribing time.

Paint colour and hardware are the smallest lines. Site conditions and what the piece hides set the number.

Built-ins questions from Aurora

Asked before the first call.

Do you build alcove units in Aurora?

Yes. Alcove built-ins either side of a chimney breast are one of the most common jobs in Aurora. Each side is measured separately and drawn as a pair.

Are built-ins in Aurora painted on site?

No. Everything is sprayed in our shop, so the room stays clean and the finish is smoother. Scribe edges are touched up after fitting.

Do you install in Aurora, or only design and build?

We do all three. The same crew that measures delivers and installs, which is why the boxes match the room. Aurora installs are booked as full days rather than half days because of the drive, so the run goes in over [n] consecutive days instead of visits spread across weeks.

Our kitchen is in an addition on an older Aurora house. Does that complicate things?

It changes the measure. Additions often meet the original house out of square and at a slightly different floor level, so we measure both rooms, record the step and design the transition as a filler or a panelled return rather than pretending the two walls agree with each other.
