Each slat is a solid piece, milled and eased in the shop, fixed to a dark backer so the gaps read as shadow. Slat width and gap are chosen from cut samples, not a picture, because the proportion changes with the size of the wall and the distance you see it from.
Walnut darkens a little and evens out over the first years. An oil finish keeps the surface repairable: a scratch is sanded and re-oiled locally rather than refinished.

Is a slat wall hard to clean?
A soft brush or a vacuum with a brush head clears the gaps. The oiled surface wipes with a damp cloth. It does not need more than a yearly re-oil in a dry house.
Can a door hide in the slats?
Yes. The door carries its own slats on the same spacing, on a pivot or concealed hinge, with a touch latch. It shows only when open.
