Built-ins in Scarborough

Driveways are wide and front doors open onto a short hall, so delivery is straightforward and the crew can stage boxes in the garage. Boxes are built and finished in the shop, delivered and scribed to the alcove over [n] days. Built-ins are cabinets and shelving fixed to the room, drawn to the walls they sit against and scribed on site.

Built-ins · Scarborough

Scarborough, on the ground.

Scarborough is largely postwar bungalows and side-splits with closed kitchens, wide lots and limited basement headroom. Older houses with chimney breasts and alcoves are made for built-ins; newer rooms with flat walls gain a place for them from a run of shelving with a lit centre. Kitchens, basement bars and wall units, laundry rooms and bathroom vanities make up most of the Scarborough work.

In Scarborough the usable height in a basement is set by the ducts rather than the joists, so we measure the lowest point in the room before drawing anything.

Built-ins questions from Scarborough

Asked before the first call.

Do you build alcove units in Scarborough?

Yes. Alcove built-ins either side of a chimney breast are one of the most common jobs in Scarborough. Each side is measured separately and drawn as a pair.

Are built-ins in Scarborough painted on site?

No. Everything is sprayed in our shop, so the room stays clean and the finish is smoother. Scribe edges are touched up after fitting.

Can you build cabinets to the ceiling in a bungalow with low ceilings?

Yes, and in a small kitchen it is usually the right call. We run the tall units and uppers to the ceiling with a scribe at the top so the joint closes against a surface that is rarely flat. The top row holds what you reach for a few times a year rather than everyday items.

My basement has ducts running across the ceiling. Can I still get a built-in bar down there?

Yes. We measure to the underside of the lowest duct and design the bar to that height, then either box the duct in with a matching panel or stop the uppers short and add a single shelf. The shop build starts once the layout is approved and takes [n] weeks.
