Custom cabinetry in Scarborough
Valmont designs, builds and installs custom cabinetry in Scarborough: kitchens, vanities, laundry rooms, closets and basement millwork. The stock here is mostly postwar bungalows and side-splits on wide lots, and that changes the design. The kitchen is a closed room with a doorway at each end, so the run is short and the storage has to go up. We build tall units to the ceiling and put a pantry bank where a broom closet used to be.

Basements take the other half of the work. Ceiling height in a Scarborough bungalow basement is limited, and ducts run across it, so a bar or a wall unit gets designed around the lowest point in the room. We measure that height first. The uppers stop under the duct, the cornice is dropped or left off, and the base run carries the storage instead. The rendering shows the finished height against the ceiling so nothing is a surprise on install day.
Side-splits bring their own puzzle: a kitchen half a level up from the family room, with a railing and a short flight between them. Delivery goes through the side door and up that flight, so we size the boxes for the turn. Every box, door and drawer front is cut, edged and finished in our shop in Richmond Hill, then dry-fitted before it leaves, which keeps the install to setting and levelling instead of fabrication in your driveway.

Can you build cabinets to the ceiling in a bungalow with low ceilings?
Yes, and in a small kitchen it is usually the right call. We run the tall units and uppers to the ceiling with a scribe at the top so the joint closes against a surface that is rarely flat. The top row holds what you reach for a few times a year rather than everyday items.
My basement has ducts running across the ceiling. Can I still get a built-in bar down there?
Yes. We measure to the underside of the lowest duct and design the bar to that height, then either box the duct in with a matching panel or stop the uppers short and add a single shelf. The shop build starts once the layout is approved and takes [n] weeks.
Do you replace just the doors, or the whole kitchen?
We build complete cabinetry: boxes, doors and drawer fronts, all made in our own shop and dry-fitted before delivery. Refacing an existing carcass is not what we do, because in a kitchen of that age the box is usually the part that has failed, not the door.
