Cabinetry in a house like that is a fitting job as much as a building job. We measure the reveals, the baseboard height and the floor slope, then draw the cabinetry to sit inside the room rather than on top of it: a plinth that relates to the existing base, a stile width that answers the door casings, and scribes wide enough to take the lean. Out on the acreage the rooms are newer and larger, and the work turns to long runs and walk-in pantries.
Everything is cut, edged and finished in our own shop and dry-fitted before it leaves. Kam does the design and the build; the crew measures, delivers and installs. Step two is elevations plus a photorealistic 3D rendering, which is where a heritage room is easiest to judge, because you can see the new cabinetry beside the trim you already live with. Will new cabinetry look wrong next to our old trim?
It will if the proportions ignore the trim. We take the baseboard height, the casing width and the reveal depth at the measure, then set the plinth and the door stiles to relate to them. On the rendering you see the cabinetry against your actual trim, so that judgement is made before anything is cut.
Can you build a library or a study wall, not only a kitchen?
Yes. Shelving walls, desks, cabinets under shelves and doors on the lower half are regular millwork for us. In older rooms we allow for the wall being out of plumb and the floor running downhill, and we fix the shelving back to structure rather than to plaster alone.
We are outside the village on a rural road. Does that change anything?
Only the logistics. We confirm the driveway, the turning space and the site contact before the truck is loaded, and we ask about the road surface if it has been wet.
