Custom cabinetry in Whitby
Valmont designs, builds and installs custom cabinetry in Whitby: kitchens, islands, mudrooms, closets and built-in storage across the downtown streets, the south end and Brooklin. Whitby keeps two clocks. Downtown has houses old enough to have plaster, narrow doorways and stairs that limit what can be carried up in one piece. Brooklin and the newer areas around it are recent, with square walls, taller main floors and kitchens that open into the rest of the ground floor.

We build to suit whichever one you have. In the older houses, cabinets are drawn in sections that fit through the door and up the stair, then joined on site with the joint landing on a reveal where it reads as a line rather than a seam. In the newer houses the constraint is the plan, not the door: three sides of the cabinetry are visible from the living room, so backs and ends get finished the way fronts do.
Step two of the project is elevations plus a photorealistic 3D rendering, before any material is ordered. Once you sign off, everything is cut, edged and finished in our shop in Richmond Hill and dry-fitted there. The crew measures, delivers and installs. The quote is itemized, so the island, the perimeter and the mudroom each stand on their own line and can be moved to a later phase.
Open plans in newer parts of Whitby leave cabinet backs and ends in full view, so those faces are finished like fronts.

Our downtown house has a tight stair. Will a tall cabinet fit up it?
We check the stair, the turn and the ceiling height at the landing during the measure. Where a one-piece tall unit will not make the turn, we build it as two stacked sections with the joint on a reveal. It is a normal solution, it is planned in the shop, and it does not weaken the unit.
The kitchen is open to the living room. What do we do about the back of the island?
The back and the ends are treated as visible faces: finished panels, a matching plinth and the same reveal as the doors. Some clients run a slatted or shaker panel there instead of a flat one. It appears as a line item on the quote, because it takes real material and real shop time.
Do you work in Brooklin as well as Whitby proper?
Yes, Brooklin is part of Whitby and we work throughout the town. Newer Brooklin houses tend to have 9 ft main floors and larger kitchens, so the drawings lean toward tall units and longer islands. The design process, the shop build and the install run identically in both.
