Whitby, on the ground.
Whitby ranges from older downtown houses with plaster and narrow stairs to recent subdivisions in Brooklin and the south end. Older homes usually give a back hall or a landing to work with, while newer builds hand over a purpose-built mudroom between the garage and the kitchen. Older streets can mean tight stairs and doorways, so tall units are built in sections where one piece will not make the turn. We measure the entry, build and finish the run in our shop, then deliver, level it on a plinth and scribe the ends to the floor and wall.
Open plans in newer parts of Whitby leave cabinet backs and ends in full view, so those faces are finished like fronts.

Everything is itemized from the drawings, so the bench, the lockers and the upper cabinets each carry their own line and can be adjusted before you sign.

Can a mudroom be built into a narrow back hall in Whitby?
Often yes. A shallow run of hooks, a bench and a tall unit at one end works in a hall where full lockers would block the path. We measure the clear width at step 01 and draw the shallowest version that still holds coats and boots.
Do you build around the garage door threshold?
Yes. The threshold, the step and the door swing are recorded at the measure, and the plinth and end panel are drawn to clear them. Nothing is cut until you have seen it in the rendering.
Do you work in Brooklin as well as Whitby proper?
Yes, Brooklin is part of Whitby and we work throughout the town. Newer Brooklin houses tend to have 9 ft main floors and larger kitchens, so the drawings lean toward tall units and longer islands. The design process, the shop build and the install run identically in both.
Our downtown house has a tight stair. Will a tall cabinet fit up it?
We check the stair, the turn and the ceiling height at the landing during the measure. Where a one-piece tall unit will not make the turn, we build it as two stacked sections with the joint on a reveal. It is a normal solution, it is planned in the shop, and it does not weaken the unit.
