Custom cabinetry in York (Toronto)
Valmont designs, builds and installs custom cabinetry in York: kitchens, vanities, closets, basement kitchens and wall units. The stretch from the Junction through Weston and Mount Dennis is brick semis and detached houses from the first half of the last century, with narrow rooms and stairs that turn at a landing. What fits on the drawing also has to fit up those stairs, so we size the boxes for the turn before anything is released to the shop.

Second kitchens in the basement come up often here. Ceiling height is the first measurement, since ducts and a beam cut into it, and the stair to the side door decides the largest box we can bring down. We build the run in sections and joint them on site with a filler at the wall. The sink position and the vent route come from what is already roughed in, so the layout is planned around those services.
Above grade the kitchens are narrow and the walls are plaster over lath, so nothing is flat and nothing is square. Every end panel carries scribe allowance and the fillers are cut on site. Step two of the project is elevations plus a photorealistic 3D rendering, and the quote breaks out each run and each panel, so trimming scope means removing a line rather than starting again. Older houses in York have moved since they were built, so scribe stiles and site-cut fillers are part of the design from the first drawing.

Will a finished cabinet fit up my narrow staircase?
We check that at the site measure. We take the stair width, the headroom over the flight and the landing turn, then split the run into boxes that make it. If a section cannot go up assembled, it is built to be joined on the landing, with the joint placed where a stile falls so it does not show.
Can you build a second kitchen in the basement?
Yes. We design to the ceiling height under the lowest duct, use the sink and vent positions already there where we can, and keep the tall units clear of the beam. Any [second suite requirements from the City] are for the owner or the builder to confirm before the cabinetry is ordered.
The walls in my house are plaster and nothing is straight. Does that change the job?
It changes time on site rather than the cabinets themselves. We add scribe stiles at the ends of each run and oversize the fillers, then cut them to the wall during the install. The itemized quote carries the install as its own line so you can see what that stage covers.
