Feature walls in York (Toronto)
A feature wall is fluted or slat millwork set out so the rhythm lands correctly at both ends, with any door in the wall built from the same panel. York runs from Junction semis to Weston and Mount Dennis detached houses, mostly early last century, with plaster walls and narrow rooms. Older homes bring plaster walls that are rarely plumb and need packing behind the panels, while newer builds give flat drywall and taller ceilings that suit a full-height run.

Stairs turn at a landing and halls are tight, so runs are split into boxes sized for that turn and jointed on site. We measure the wall and every plate on it, machine and finish the panels in our shop, then install against a checked substrate and hold the shadow gaps constant.
Older houses in York have moved since they were built, so scribe stiles and site-cut fillers are part of the design from the first drawing.

Each wall is quoted on its own line off the setting-out drawing, so the panelling, the concealed door and the returns are all visible as separate items.

Can a feature wall be installed in an occupied York home?
Yes. The machining and finishing happen in our shop, so the site work is fixing panels and adjusting reveals. That keeps the dust and the noise in the room for [n] days rather than across the whole project.
Can the wall carry a television or shelves?
Yes, with blocking behind it. We need the bracket details and the screen size at step 01 so the blocking is drawn in and the panel joints fall where the mount will hide them.
The walls in my house are plaster and nothing is straight. Does that change the job?
It changes time on site rather than the cabinets themselves. We add scribe stiles at the ends of each run and oversize the fillers, then cut them to the wall during the install. The itemized quote carries the install as its own line so you can see what that stage covers.
Will a finished cabinet fit up my narrow staircase?
We check that at the site measure. We take the stair width, the headroom over the flight and the landing turn, then split the run into boxes that make it. If a section cannot go up assembled, it is built to be joined on the landing, with the joint placed where a stile falls so it does not show.
