Custom cabinetry in East York
Valmont designs, builds and installs custom cabinetry in East York: kitchens, vanities, closets, laundry rooms and built-in shelving. The houses in Leaside, Todmorden and the streets off Coxwell are small and well built, and the kitchens were drawn for a shorter list of appliances. Getting a full size fridge, a dishwasher and a range into that footprint takes a plan for every inch, including the strip beside the doorway that most layouts give up on.

Ceilings are lower than in a new build, so a tall unit stops under eight feet and the top row is either reachable or accepted as long term storage. Old chimney breasts and flues sit in the middle of walls. Rather than fight one, we build around it with a panelled return, which reads as a decision instead of a leftover. The elevations show that return, and the widths either side of it, before any box is cut.
Leaside houses usually keep the dining room, so the kitchen has one doorway, one window and no room to spread out. That pushes storage into a tall bank on the end wall and into drawers under the counter. Every box, door and drawer front is cut, edged and finished in our shop in Richmond Hill, then dry-fitted there, so the install does not turn into cutting parts on your floor with the room out of service.
Because a East York kitchen is often a single closed room, every decision is a trade between counter and storage, and that trade gets settled in the elevations.
East York is small wartime and postwar houses plus Leaside brick, with compact kitchens, low ceilings and the occasional chimney breast mid wall.
Front doors open onto narrow halls and driveways are shared or single width, so boxes are carried in rather than staged outside.

Asked before the first call.
There is an old chimney breast in the middle of my East York kitchen wall. What do you do with it?
We measure it at top and bottom, because these are rarely plumb, and build the cabinetry to return around it with a panel on each face. The uppers either side are set to line up with each other, so the eye reads a straight run even though the wall behind is not.
Can I get a full size fridge into a small kitchen without losing the counter?
Usually, but it has to be settled at the drawing stage. We take the fridge depth with the door on, plus the hinge swing, and set the surround so the door clears the neighbouring cabinet. The counter is then recovered on the opposite wall in a run of drawers rather than lost altogether.
How long is the shop stage after we approve the drawings?
[n] weeks in the shop, then a delivery and install window we book from there. Cutting does not start until the site measurements are confirmed and the appliance specs are in hand, because a late appliance change means recutting a box rather than adjusting one.
