Built-ins in East York

Front doors open onto narrow halls and driveways are shared or single width, so boxes are carried in rather than staged outside. Boxes are built and finished in the shop, delivered and scribed to the alcove over [n] days. Built-ins are cabinets and shelving fixed to the room, drawn to the walls they sit against and scribed on site.

Built-ins · East York

East York, on the ground.

East York is small wartime and postwar houses plus Leaside brick, with compact kitchens, low ceilings and the occasional chimney breast mid wall. Older houses with chimney breasts and alcoves are made for built-ins; newer rooms with flat walls gain a place for them from a run of shelving with a lit centre. Kitchens, laundry rooms, bathroom vanities and built-in shelving in the living room are the usual jobs here.

Because a East York kitchen is often a single closed room, every decision is a trade between counter and storage, and that trade gets settled in the elevations.

Built-ins questions from East York

Asked before the first call.

Do you build alcove units in East York?

Yes. Alcove built-ins either side of a chimney breast are one of the most common jobs in East York. Each side is measured separately and drawn as a pair.

Are built-ins in East York painted on site?

No. Everything is sprayed in our shop, so the room stays clean and the finish is smoother. Scribe edges are touched up after fitting.

Can I get a full size fridge into a small kitchen without losing the counter?

Usually, but it has to be settled at the drawing stage. We take the fridge depth with the door on, plus the hinge swing, and set the surround so the door clears the neighbouring cabinet. The counter is then recovered on the opposite wall in a run of drawers rather than lost altogether.

How long is the shop stage after we approve the drawings?

[n] weeks in the shop, then a delivery and install window we book from there. Cutting does not start until the site measurements are confirmed and the appliance specs are in hand, because a late appliance change means recutting a box rather than adjusting one.
